Animatic Storyboard [iMovie]
Using iMovie I created an animatic storyboard for me to get a rough idea of the possible shots I could use in my final music video. I edited the shots the way it should look like in the music video; I cut each shot to the beat of the music and made sure it went in time to the music. the animatic storyboard helped me have a good understanding of how my music video would look like visually. I also thought it would be a good idea to show different people and get feedback of what they think is going in the the storyboard, a lot understood the narrative and some noticed that there was a few shots missing, I than used the feedback to improve my storyboard.

My MoodBoard :)
I made a moodboard to put all my ideas together for my music video. Which includes setting, costume, props and location, I’ve also attached other R&B music video that have similar narrative to my own music video e.g. ‘Run away love’ by Ludacris ft. Mary J. Blige and ‘How to Love’ By lil Wayne.

Synopsis
My music video is about a young woman who questions herself worth and never really experienced true love; she never found love at home, she witnesses her mother being abused by her father and then finds her own self sexually abused. She had always been valued on outer beauty and her body. She has learned to measure her worth with her body and never experienced a man loving her for her inner beauty and who she is on the inside. She goes back in time into her pass step by step and sees the reason as to why she ended up where she is now, at the end of the music video we see the protagonist in a church symbolising that she is repenting from her sins and so she had to visit her pass to start all over and become ‘born again’. My music video has a religious intertextual reference about the idea that when you repent you have to revisit your pass.

The song I am going to use for my music video is 'How to Love' by Tinashe Kachingwe (Originally by Hip Hop artist Lil Wayne) the genre of this song is R&B.
I have chosen this particular song because I thought it would be interesting how the narrative could change through a female’s perspective and what point of view the audience would look at it.
Background information
At age 14, Tinashe was approached by former pop-star Vitamin C to join an all-girl singing and dancing group. She quickly joined Allie Gonino, Hayley Kiyoko, Marisol Esparza and Kelsey Saunders (later replaced by Lauren Hudson in 2009) to form the Stunners. The goup soon signed with Columbia Records and released a single titled Bubblegum to iTunes along with the official video for the single and as contributed a song to the iCarly soundtrack.
In 2009, the group left Columbia Records and signed a production deal with Lionsgate Entertainment, who also produced a scripted television show pilot based on the group, which was ordered by MTV. In October of that year, the girls released a 5-song EP and shot a music video for their promo single We Got It which was released on February 22, 2010.
They released a holiday single in December 2009, produced by Desmond Child, titled Santa Bring My Soilder Home and performed the song on The Today Show as well as The Wendy Williams Show. After meeting with various labels interested in the group, they signed to Universal Republic Records in 2010 and released their first single Dancin' Around the Truth which featured the New Boyz to iTunes as well as Top 40 radio stations. The music video premiered June 2, just before the group was announced as an opening act on Justin Bieber's My World Tour.
On March 16, 2011 Tinashe announced that she was now pursuing a solo career and working on a solo album. Since her departure, the band has separated. She also announced via her official twitter page that she would be singing the theme song to the CW show Shedding for the Wedding. On April 6th, 2010, a demo solo song Chainsaw, produced by The Cataracs leaked online. Tinashe also sang background vocals for her label mate Bobby Brackins single A1 which also features Dev and well as being featured on a song for his upcoming album, titled "Cake". On May 3, 2011 Tinashe gave her first televised solo performance in front of 57,000 people during the Dodgers VS. Cubs baseball game singing the National Anthem and God Bless America.

Survey Results
These are the results of my questionnaire. I handed the questionnaire to 20 participants to learn more about what my target audience look for in an R&B music video, through the outcome result I was able gather some information that I can use to attract potential target audiences.
From the information that I have gathered I learnt that my target audience like music that relates to them or that contains lyrics that talks about things that happen in society. 75% said they like R&B music video that contains reality rather than humor, I noted that my target audience are fans of narrative based music video.
I asked whom my target audience who is their favourite female R&B music artist now out of the following artist; many concluded that Kelly Rowland was their favourite. I will use this information and research more about Kelly Rowland as an artist and see how I could make my artist similar to her. Making an artist profile of the artist that I will be using for my video would be useful.

Tinashe - 'How to Love' lyrics
Chorus:
You had a lot of crooks tryna' steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love
How to love
You had a lot of moments that didn’t last forever
Now you in the corner tryna’ put it together
How to love
How to love
Bridge:
For a second you were here
Why you over there?
It’s hard not to stare, the way you moving your body
Like you never had a love
Never had a love, oh
When you was just a young’on you’re looks but so precious
But now your grown up
So fly it’s like a blessing but you can’t have a man look at you for 5 seconds
Without you being insecure
You never credit yourself so when you got older
It’s seems like you came back 10 times over
Now you’re sitting here in this damn corner
Looking through all your thoughts and looking over your shoulder
Chorus:
See you had a lot of crooks tryna' steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love
How to love
See you had a lot of moments that didn’t last forever
Now you in the corner tryna' put it together
How to love
How to love
Bridge:
For a second you were here
Why you over there?
It’s hard not to stare the way you moving your body
Like you never had a love

Had a love
You had a lot of dreams that transform to visions
The fact that you saw the world affected all your decisions
But it wasn’t your fault
Wasn’t in your intentions
You the one here talking to me
You don’t wanna listen
But I admire your poppin' bottles and dippin’
Just as much as you admire bar-tending and stripping
Baby, so don’t be mad
Nobody else trippin
You see a lot of crooks and the crooks still crook
See you had a lot of crooks tryna' steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love
How to love
See you had a lot of moments that didn’t last forever
Now you in the corner tryna' put it together
How to love
How to love
Oooh,
See I just want you to know
That you deserve the best
You’re beautiful
You’re beautiful
Yeah
And I want you to know, you’re far from the usual
Far from the usual
Chorus: (x2)
You see you had a lot of crooks tryna steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love

Annotated Lyrics
Annotating the lyrics of the song helped me consider Andrew Goodwin's theory that states there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. Most R&B music video have a link between the lyrics and the visual, so I intend to add some of Andrew Goodwin’s theory to create meaning and easy to understand.
My Final Idea
In the end i figured that this song would be good as i wil be able to construct a good narrative and also beacuse the artist is unknown so thefore i would be able to focus on a new star image for my artist =.
My First Idea
This was my initial idea; I thought it would be easy since a love narrative is be simple and straight forward however I decided not to do it anymore due to the fact the it would have been difficult to challenge R&B music forms and conventions which is one of my goals.

Star Image Textual Analysis
2000 |
2006 |
2011 |
Marshall Bruce Mathers (better known by stage name Eminem) is an American HipHop rapper who was signed to D12 record label for a few years but later left to pursue a solo career therefore signed to his own record label shady recorders. He has achieved ten number one albums on the billboard 200. He has also sold more than 33 million track downloads and 39.6 million albums in the United States alone.
When Eminem became known in the music industry his star image was established as a naïve and comical artist, due to his previous music videos that contained intertextual references about other celebrities and music artists’ personal lives. For example in the music video ‘Just lose it’ he plays different roles in the video, through intertextual references he imitates one of Micheal Jackson’s video brining a sense of humour for the audience. Throughout the video close ups and low angle shots of Eminem are used giving him a centre of attention power, the low angles show that he is dominate in the video and also to gives emphasis to his star persona and help promote him as a star. Eminem also uses intertextual references in his previous videos e.g. ‘without me’ and ‘The Real Slim Shady’.
However Eminem’s star image motif matures slowly, this is seen through his new look in ‘Not Afraid’ album; black hair, smart and simple clothing. His recent music videos don’t contain humorous intertextual references which helps him deliver a serious approach towards the viewers, its also notable that he throw the ‘Silm Shady’ alter ego to the side.
By analysing Eminem’s career as an artist from when he started and now I can say that his brand image has changed in a significant manner. I believe that Eminem wants his fans to look at him at a different angle.

Music Video Textual Analysis - Avant && Nichole
The music video that I will be analysing is directed by Beau Dozier, song by Avant featuring Nichole Scherzinger. The style genre of this video is Rhythm and Base (usually abbreviated to R&B) the characteristics are; Steady up beat with variety of pitches, easy to understand and usually about love life whether its negative or positive, through R&B audience are able to relate due to the fact that there’s often a structured narrative or a message.
In the beginning of the video before the main artist Avant starts sings there’s a quick establishing shot of city building with dark grey cloud over it suggesting that there’s disequilibrium atmosphere, the camera then cuts into a long shot of him facing is back towards the camera in a low lighted livingroom. camera then fades into a different scene with an establishing shot of a mansion where the weather is different; it’s sunny and bright with a calmer atmosphere, a mid-shot of Nichole on the phone is shown as the camera cuts into an extreme close up of Avant, of the side of his face where the audience is able to see the clear white headset therefore the audience acknowledge that they are on the phone to each other. As he sings “Baby I know when we started out there were things you didn't know, but babygirl we got a lotta things we Need to discuss I know I’m asking for allot, but just trust” the camera fades into a long shot of both of them in a dark confined space and we notice that there’s a pillar in-between them connoting that there is something that is stopping them from being happy, the audience gathers that they are in a relationship and its ‘complicated’ things don’t seem to be going to well.
The relationship between the music and the visual is significant; I noticed that in the beginning of the video, the video fades and cuts to the beat which has an impact as it cuts accurately at the same time as the beat. However as the music video gets tensed cuts slow down so that the audience is able to observe the relationship of both singers and understand how both of them are feeling.
When Nichole replies to him saying “First I thought that I could take you boy but I don't know, you told me you were gonna leave her for me long ago.” A high pitch violin commences which enhances her concern about the situation.
This music video is narrative-based and structured in a single strand, focusing on the main artist, Avant who is stuck in two relationships and has to make a decision on which he will remain with. As the video end we see Avant struggling in the storm to get in his car which connotes that he is finding it hard to his decision the camera then cuts into an extreme close up of Nichole’s fingers where we are able to see her rings, as Avant harmonises and the music gets louder the camera then cuts into a mid-shot of her, taking off the ring. Avant continues to say to Nichole “just a litlle bit, just a litlle bit, just a litlle bit, longer, longer” she eventually joins him in agreement to wait ‘just a little bit longer’. The editing is done this way deliberately to bring tension. The music video finally end with a high angle of Nichole with the sky as a background which then after a few seconds gray clouds take over showing that Avant is coming over to her.
All in all this music video is Narrative-based were the director’s main focus is on the situation. I believe that this music video is targeted at many young people who find themselves in this kind of love triangle situation. The song's lyrics are based on deceitfulness. What woman truly wants their relationship based on that.
